Does Bergamot Juice Lower Cholesterol?

I have high cholesterol and don’t want to take a statin. What do you think instead of taking bergamot juice? It has natural statins exclusive to bergamot similar to the medicinal product! Bergamot is a bitter citrus fruit (Citrus Bergamia) native to the Calabria region of Italy. Used and known throughout the world as an ingredient in Earl Gray tea and gives it its characteristic taste. The fruit looks like a yellowish orange and tastes more like a lemon. Until a decade ago, it was grown mainly for an essential oil with a colored peel that is used to perfume foods, cosmetics and perfumes.

Four recent human studies have suggested that thanks to the flavonoids (plant-based antioxidants) it contains, bergamot juice can help reduce high cholesterol. The effect may be sufficient to allow people taking a statin to reduce the dose without reducing the drug’s effectiveness. A study published in 2013 showed that cholesterol decreased significantly among 77 patients who took 1,000 mg of bergamot extract per day for a month, allowing them to cut their statin dose in half. Bergamot juice has also been shown to increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

Statins are widely used to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and protect against heart disease and heart attacks. They also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce plaque buildup in coronary arteries by preventing oxidation of LDL cholesterol. While they can be very effective in this regard, they can cause muscle pain and rare liver toxicity. Other less serious side effects that tend to go away over time include stomach pain, gas, constipation, and abdominal pain or cramps. Some individuals experience severe muscle aches that require statin therapy to be discontinued. Bergamot juice offers cholesterol-lowering benefits, lowers blood sugar.

NEWS: The natural statins of bergamot have still proved to be a natural weapon against fatty liver disease: this is revealed by a study conducted by the University of Catanzaro (Italy) and published in the international journal Nature Scientific.

Background: Some patients experience statin-induced side effects or prefer nutraceutical approaches for the treatment of dyslipidemia. This has led to a search for alternative therapeutic approaches for dyslipidemia management. In recent studies Citrus bergamia (known as Bergamot) juice was able to reduce serum levels of lipids. Such benefit may be attributed to high amounts of flavonoids contained in Bergamot fruit juice (neoeriocitrin, neohesperidin, naringin). The aim of the present study was to fully investigate the effects of a Bergamot extract on cardio-metabolic parameters, including plasma lipids, atherogenic lipoproteins and subclinical atherosclerosis.
